Yesterday–Nov. 12th–was Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s 197th birthday! The year–1880–she turned 65th was notable in that she retired after 11 years on the  lecture circuit, which had kept her on the road for 8 months of the year; she attempted to vote in Tenafly, NJ ( SBA accompanied her); and she began keeping a diary. “My philosophy,” she wrote in her first entry, “is to live one day at a time, neither to waste my force in apprehension of evils to come, nor regrets for the blunders of the past.”  The photo is from last year’s celebration at her grave in Woodlawn Cemetery in New York City.
