In the countdown to the election & conversations about representation, voter suppression laws, etc., I am reminded of Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s admonition in her speech “The Solitude of the Self” to the U.S. House of Representative’s Judiciary Committee on Feb. 18, 1892: “To deny political equality is to rob the ostracised of all self-respect; of credit in the market place; of recompense in the world of work; of a voice in those who make and administer the law; a choice in the jury before whom they are tried, and in the judge who decides their punishment.”
