Cincinnati, Ohio:

The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County brought Penny Colman to Cincinnati, Ohio, for Children's Book Week 2004. She spoke to large audiences of children, teachers and librarian at four different branch libraries. With her in the picture on the left, taken at the College Hill Branch Library, are (l-r) Laura Dell, Programs/Exhibits Coordinator; Becky Cohn, Programs Assistant; Arnice Smith, Children's Librarian; and Penny Colman. In the other picture, taken at the Dehli Township Branch Library where Tess Imholt is the children's librarian, Penny Colman is reading from Corpses, Coffins, and Crypts: A History of Burial to sixth grade students, teachers, and librarians from Dehli Middle School.

Reading, Massachusetts:

After hearing about Penny Colman's book, Corpses, Coffins, and Crypts: A History of Burial, students at Coolidge Middle School in Reading, MA, wrote epitaphs and designed gravestones for characters in fiction books. Here are two marvelous examples of their creativity. Click on the images to see them full size.

The middle schools and the public library in Reading, Massachusetts work together in bringing a literary artist to the young adults in their school system. Penny Colman appeared on March 27 and 28, 2003. A series of presentations, workshops, and events were planned by Susan L. Beauregard and Lorraine Barry, Young Adult Librarians at Reading Public Library, Jennifer Buliszak, Library Media Specialist at Parker Middle School, and Mary Hichborn, Library Media Specialist at Coolidge Middle School. Mary Hichborn used a PowerPoint presentation created by Joe Iacoviello, an 8 th grade student, to prepare the students for Colman's visit. Joe and Mrs. Hichborn added material to the presentation after Penny Colman's visit. It is a terrific show and click here to view “Penny Colman.” And, a huge thank you to Joe Iacoviello and Mrs. Mary Hichborn!
