Last night I got word that the second edition of my book, “Spies! Women in the Civil War” is now available as an ebook (with an orange cover that I love!). I did my research in the early 90s, traveling to various sites, including the grave of my favorite spy Elizabeth Van Lew who operated a spy ring in Richmond, Virginia. Hearing about her death (she died a pauper) in 1900, admirers in Boston shipped a huge hunk of rugged stone to mark her grave. A bronze plaque fastened to the grayish-beige and rose-colored boulder reads: “She risked everything that is dear to man–friends, fortune, comfort, health, life itself–all for the one absorbing desire of her heart, that slavery might be abolished and the Union preserved.
